Finding Your Life’s Purpose
I still don’t know my life’s purpose or how to find it.–Kimberly
This is
a common theme among women. We find ourselves caught up with living the life
that we are presented with then one day realize that, inside, there is a certain emptiness. Regardless of where you are in life, there are two general steps to getting
where you want to be:
- First you need a plan (the what), then
- a way to integrate the plan into your daily habits and routines
(the how).

organizing your whole life, can help you accomplish both.
How My Life Matters TM can help you discover your life's

Figuring out your life's purpose requires both soul searching and research. You may
choose to follow an expert's program to guide you or move through the steps below. In either case, My Life Matters TM can help you with keeping the momentum going while also keeping up with your daily responsibilities. The My Goals (A); My Life,
Myself (B); My Week (D); and My Days (E) sections will all play a
part in helping you move toward discovering what you should be doing in life.
Steps to Discovering Your Life Purpose
Fulfilling your purpose in life is about
becoming happy and motivated with what you are doing, ridding yourself of the doubt in the back of your head; the one that says, "is this really the
right thing to do with my life?"
But how do you get from "I don't know" to "this is IT"?
- First, plan time to complete the steps to get you there. At the beginning of the
month, schedule time each week to devote exclusively to
moving forward with steps 2-8. Block out the time in the
monthly or daily calendar pages, plus make a note in the My Week
or My Days space to reinforce your intentions.
- Remember the three happiest time periods in your life and write about
them. What was it about each that made them satisfying? You can use the My Life,
Myself page for this, located at the beginning of the month.
- Write about three things you are really good at, such as past jobs or
situations where you excel. Explain what you do that makes you good at each.
Write these below your happiest times on the My Life, Myself page. If
you need more room, flip back to the blank page just before the month calendar (C)
or tuck paper in the back pocket.
- Take a week's break before starting step 4. At the end of the week reread what you have written. As you read, write
several phrases that describe the activities and situations you've written
about. Use My Days or the My Week or Weekend (F) area to make
your list.
Based on your answers to steps 2 and 3, Kimberly, your list would look similar to the one below.

- It is time to collaborate. We encourage you to meet with a small group of
like-minded women weekly, in person or online, to discuss ideas and for
moral support. Using the list from step 4, brainstorm several ideas for what you may want to do
differently in life. Your intuition will tell you which of these are likely
candidates for realizing your life's purpose. Understand that it is natural to
be nervous about new life adventures. So do not dismiss a possibility simply because of
nerves.
- Is your hesitation about certain suggestions temporary nervousness or
would your discomfort be permanent? The difference is very important. If you are unsure, take time to discover your personality
profile. This will help you understand what type of environment in which you
would naturally excel. There are several methods to determine
personality, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator being one of the most popular. Popular books on the subject include:
After setting aside time for, then completing the six steps above you will have
narrowed your potential life purposes to two or three. To continue along your
journey to self discovery, keep setting aside time each week. Use the time to
research each option and discover which changes will fit into your life. When
you are tempted to let everyday tasks infringe upon that me time, say to
yourself "my life matters" and persist in moving forward toward your life’s purpose.
